I'm nearly done (finally!) with Hope, Book 1 in the Wild Thistle Trilogy. This book is truly the book of my heart. I love the characters, setting and plot. The heroine is one of the strongest I've written and I love writing her. And the hero, I must say is sexy, strong, and loves to tangle with the heroine.

Once I give the book one more run through, it's off and running. I feel an energy when I'm working on a story that is hard to define. Creativity flows-ideas percolate-fingers fly over the keyboard. Sometimes I feel as if I have a split personalities -- the contemporary, writer, the historical writer, and the teen novel writer. I read everything and it seems that stories pop into my mind that are as varied as my many moods.

I know there are several writers who compose for different genres, and I love that. But I wonder with myself if I am doing my writing a disservice since it takes different ideas, research, and energy to write different genres. I don't know, but I can't help but nurture these stories and allow them to come to light. So, it may take me longer, but I think my inner muse is happier.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles~
Madelyn

Movies, Books, Can't Wait

I know I have written about books to movies, but some friends and I were talking recently about one of our favorite character-Stephanie Plum. I'm so curious to see how Katherine Heigl does in the role of Stephanie. I've seen some pictures and with her hair dyed dark brown, she kinda looks like the what I expect Stephanie to look like.

Don't we all do that? Envision characters and then when they are cast in a movie, we cry outrage? I guess that is why I love books so much. I get to cast the characters with the help of the writer and their imagination-descriptions, actions, and story.

So,
Sherri Sheppard = Lula = Genius
Debbie Reynolds = Grandma Mazur = I can live with this choice
Patrick Fischler = Vinnie Plum = Perfectly smarmy and creepy
Jason O'Mara = Joe Morelli = Confusing, isn't he really Irish?
Daniel Sunjata = Ranger = Not beefy enough (was The Rock unavailable)

They may all surprise me. Sunjata may be the best option for Ranger. I guess I just picture him as this huge man, sexy, rough, but with a soft spot for Stephanie. And O'Mara? He is not even remotely Italian looking. I've heard some people wanted Mark Wahlberg for the role - now that would be inspired.

Well, I guess I have complained enough. I'm very excited for the movie. Truly! I am! I love the characters and want to see them brought to life. And I know that with Evanovich's witty writing, the movie is going to be great.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles~
Madelyn

Books to Movies

There has been a huge influx of books made into movies over the past few years and I'm really getting sick of it. Some are done well. Others--not so much. The latest book to movie sensation was of course the Twilight Series. I enjoyed these movies, but I also enjoyed the books and could have lived forever without them being made into a movie. And let's not forget Harry Potter and what I consider a fantastic book to movie example.

What about Eat, Pray, Love? I read the book, really didn't care for it, then saw the movie. The promos looked great, wonderful, engaging. The movie--yeah, not so much. In fact the movie was too long and I was getting ready to slap Julie Roberts in the face and yell, "Snap out if it, already!"

What are some of your favorite books to movies? And when I'm scattered, it is so frustrating. I will write a few paragraphs, then become distracted by email, or searching the net, or check out facebook. Sometimes I wonder if I should have a laptop dedicated to writing and keep it bare bones--without internet access. (I have to admit, this makes me nervous)

Then I talk myself out of cutting out the net. Let's face it, I need it to do research, check facts, and search for submission guidelines, contest, and other authors.

So, I have to constantly work on keeping focused. I have remind myself that focused = better work. Focused = complete work. Focused = submitted work.

So I guess I'll have to stop writing while watching the latest reality show, talking with the kids, playing Sorority Life on Facebook, and checking my status?!?!

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles~
Madelyn

The Essense of a Good Story

To me characters are the backbone and meat of a good story. No matter the plot, setting, conflicts or resolutions, if you don't have good--no, great characters, forget it--I tune out. Think of characters as the meat and potatoes. Without those staples, substantial aspects, then your story is not going to engage the reader.

There are many books I have read and because I loved the characters, some of the plot problems weren't as important. Think of some of books you have read. Think of some of the popular stories that may not have great writing or strong plot, but those characters really get under your skin and hopefully into your heart.

I recently read a book in which I kept saying, "Why would he do that? That's not him! Why doesn't she just talk to him? That is soooo out of character!" I did not buy the plot because the people moving it forward failed in their role--failed to engage me as a read--failed to make me care what the heck happened to them.

There are classic characters--some of my favorite are Kit (From the Witch of Blackbird Pond), Jamie and Clair from the Outlander Series), Most Shakespeare characters, Any Jane Austen character, how about Stephanie Plum? I could go on for pages.

Like I said, these characters are so well written that they come alive, we think of them as our friends, we sometimes talk about them as if they are real (Harry Potter, Team Edward, Team Jacob). We love and hate these characters, but the most important factor is that we feel, we are emotional draw and/or entangled with these characters.

So, share some of your favorite characters--and tell me why they are.

That's it according to Maddy~

Toodles~
Madelyn

Summer Reading!

Well, I'm doing my share of summer reading this summer. Even though I'm still working over the summer, I'm finding the time and staying up way too late. As an educator I interact with students who allow their fear of rejection to stop them. Not only does this stop the emotional growth, but future potential. Just think of all of those people who had great ideas and didn't let their fears stop them. I immediately think of Eistein, Columbus, Davinci, Fleming, and Salk (and there are so many more). If they had stopped the first time they heard no, or didn't go after what they wanted, then were would human race be?

A comfortable place is not always the best place. As a writer, we are told to write what we know, but sometimes we have to step out of that comfort area. And a lot of times, we find a new level of brilliance.

So today, I'm not going to sit in my comfort zone. I will take a step forward and challenge my usual thoughts and actions.

How do you get what you want? How do you stop your fears from stopping you?

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles~
Madelyn

Series versus Single Title

Do you like reading a continuing series? Or do you like reading one book and being done with it?

I love continuing series. There are several that I wait and wait for the next one to come out. Some of my favorites are Adriana Trigiani, Big Stone Gap Series, Very Valentine Series, and Nora Robert's, Bed of Roses Series are some of my favorites.

And of course there are the Harry Potter and Twilight Series. I love these books and waited for them to be delivered by my faithful mailman.

Of course there is a downside to series. Waiting for the next book to be written, published, and released can take forever. And some writers have a hard time keeping the series fresh and the characters engaging.

Here's a list of my favorite series that I often go back and read again and again:
Evanovich's Stephanie Plum Series
Jan Karon Mitford Series
Lisa Kleypas' historicals
The Outlander Series

Share some of your favorites! She writes for Steeple Hill's Love Inspired line and I love how she writes real characters, real conflicts, and with great humor. Her debut book, Winter's End is available everywhere, so pick up your copy now.

Also, do you watch the Oscars? What is it that draws you, the stars, fashion, a little of both? I love the red carpet and looking at all of those beautiful gowns. But I also like the history and grandness of the ceremony. I know who I'm rooting for and I usually like the underdog, indy film types. Also, who can pass up watching Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin? Sometimes I listen, sometimes I don't. I recently read a book review published in a popular entertainment magazine and was captivated. The reviewer said she actually cried twice while reading the book--TWICE. Wow, if that isn't good praise, then what is? The reviewer waxed on and on about the writer and how perfect this debut author's writing evoked the setting, characters, and emotion. So, I said to myself, I have to read this book. I stopped by my favorite book store (hint, hint the initials are B & N), bought the book and read it.

I liked the book, it was good, the voice of the author was strong and you can tell, she wrote what she knew--which was the Appalachian Mountains. But I kept waiting for the brilliance. In my oh, so humble opinion, I felt the narrative choppy. The point of view switched from one character to another frequently and I had to re-read a few parts for clarification.

I don't mean to be harsh, but when I pay $24.99 for a book that is tagged as a brilliant debut, I expect a brilliant debut. Out of respect for the author, I won't state the title. However, has this happened to you? Let us know.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles~
Madelyn

New Year's Resolutions Anyone?

Okay, it's that time of year when everyone starts making New Year's Resolutions. I saw some postings on Facebook of people pre-planning their resolutions and I started thinking about what I would pledge this year.

There are the constants: lose weight (got rid of all the junk food), exercise more (I've joined the Y), etc. But I wanted to dig deeper, really think of things that not only matter to me, but to my family as well.

This year I really want to be more patient, less critical. I want to be more accepting and relaxed. I want to address laundry before it gets to the point no one has clean underwear. So I have taught the kids how to do laundry.

So those ideas have been added to my list and I'll add some more, less Facebook and more writing. Less surfing the net and more writing. Basically, more writing, writing, writing.

What are some of your resolutions? And what are you doing to make sure you stick to them?

Toodles for now~

Madelyn

The Inspiration of Fall

I love fall. I love the scent of the cold, crisp air, wearing sweaters, camp fires. I love it all up until the snow falls. In western NY we get a lottttt of snow. Too much snow. Heaps and heaps of snow.

But I digress. I love fall and this fall I have sent out 3 short stories, received 2 rejections (but good ones--writers know there is a difference and one even had hand writing to keep sending). So all in all, not too bad.

I'm also continuing my new young adult romance and I'm really excited about it. The research, listening to young adults talk, and making sure each sentence zings. The pacing is a new element and I'm really learning.

My interest in young adult novels started while I completed my Master's Degree in English Education. A semester full of YA novels, creating lesson plans around such novels, and enjoying the classics. (Remind me to tell you about my time spent with Shakespeare). Dissecting a YA novel through the lens of an educator is one thing, but writing it so the teen lens likes it is another.

So, wish me luck and my latest read was "Read My Lips" by Teri Brown. Very nicely done with great characters and some really unique circumstances.

My latest adult read was Nora Robert's "Bed of Roses" part two of the Bride Quartet series. Lovely book and I'm speechless at all of the detail that is so naturally done. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Feel free to share what you're reading!

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles,
Madelyn

Writing to a schedule

Writing is a very solitary task, when writing one can be lonely. That's why I find it so hard to write in the evening and my kids are running around and having fun. I stare at the computer and hear them and think, "What am I doing?". So I go and spend time with my family. But then my writing has suffered.

How do you find a happy medium? Unless I want to get up at 5am every day, then I'm going to have to reconcile the fact that writing will be slow in the summer.

Some writers I know bring their laptop to every event possible. They watch their child's soccer game while looking up between paragraphs and cheer. I just can't do that. For one, a lot of my social life revolves around my childrens' sporting events. The moms and dads are friends of ours and we use that time to catch up and talk. It's fun and I'd hate to miss out on it. What's a writer to do?!?!?!

Sorry for the rant! I'll try to do better next time. Just finished a great book, For Love and Cheesecake, by Misty Simon is a funny and entertaining read. Do you feel strongly one way or the other? I find that I really like third person, write in third person, but then I think about my plots in first person.

One book that I feel does great with first person is Twilight. We really get the depth of Bella's character through first person use and I don't feel as if I'm missing out on Edward's point of view because the dialogue and action really captures his essence.

But mostly, I think traditionalist like third person, they like to be able to see the point of view of the hero, heroine, and sometimes the villain.

I'm starting a new story that I think will really work in first person, so I'll let you know how it goes.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles
Madelyn

Trying a new thing

Change is difficult for many people, me included. I have been wavering in regards to my writing. Working full-time and my family life doesn't leave a lot of extra time. But I don't want to stop writing, in fact, I can't. I constantly think of plots, characters, and conflicts--that if I didn't write them down, I may loose my mind!

So, I have started writing several short stories. They are ranging from short short to novella and I'm having a great time.

What type of changes have you made in 2009? How are you doing? Are you sticking to your guns and ensuring the changes are sticking?

One thing that keeps resonating in my mind is that I have to make "me" time. I have to or else I will run the risk of letting my dream of writing slip through my fingers.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles,
Madelyn

Summer Lovin'

Well, the dog days of summer are almost over and I'm bushed. I've tried to keep up with all of the activities my children are involved in, as well as write and work full-time. Not an easy task.

One event I missed was the RWA National Conference. It's the first I've missed in ages , and while I'm sad I didn't go, it just wouldn't fit this year. Many of my favorite authors did attend, such as Jane Porter, Nora Roberts, and Julia Quinn. I was able to keep up with all the chatter through blogs, both author and agent. What a great way to keep in touch, get some inside scoop, and hear industry news.

Where you able to attend this year? Did you learn something new that you'd like to share?

As for writing, I'm working on several projects, mostly hisoricals, but I've been pulled in another direction with a contemporary in which the heroine is older. Wish me luck.

I've just finished reading Jude Deveraux's Return to Summerhouse and Dorothea Benton Frank's Bulls Island. Both great reads!

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles,
Madelyn

Pass the Kleenex

I just finished a book in which the last quarter I was crying. Tears sloshed down my face and my nose ran. This has happened maybe twice that I can recall. Why did this book touch me so? The characters were drawn so well that I truly cared for them, felt empathetic to their plight and plain just wanted a "Happily Ever After" ending.

The book, The Friday Night Knitting Club does not sound like a book that would elicit tears. But the emotion and actions of the characters were so real that I had no problem buying into the story. To me, these people were real, my neighbors, friends, and relatives. In fact, I read the book slowly, which is unusual for me, but I wanted to savor every word and prolong the ending.

It seems as if this book is quite the phenomenon. There are several websites for the book such as Walker and Daughter in which a community of readers is created and there are many aspects of the book such as Dakota's Bakery that will remind you of parts of the story that were endearing and fun. The story is a work of fiction, however the way that each nuance is described, it is as if you could through the upper west side of NYC and pop in for a visit.

What is so fun for me is that this is a book that I wouldn't ordinarily choose to read. My time is precious, so much of my reading is done on a research basis, or saved for established authors that I know and trust. To me, stepping outside the box brought me a special present that will encourage me to search for that next extraordinary reading encounter with a little more patience and open-mindedness.

What have you read lately that has made you take a second look or think about for days? However, the subject of reading while trying to write is a tricky one. Should we read books that are a different genre then what we are writing?

If I am reading a historical and writing a historical, will the tone, ideas, and characterization seep into my writing? I tend to think not. Mainly because I feel that all authors have their own writing "voice". My tone would not mimic the other authors writing because if it did, wouldn't it be a carbon copy of the book? Also, many writers plan their plot, GMC, and characterization prior to writing and that helps direct them more than reading another book.

I do find reading books of the same genre I am writing beneficial because it tells me what editors have purchased and perhaps their manuscript personality. I may have in insight to a specific editors love of Pirates or Highlanders. Also, books do have a tone. Are they funny? Highly sensual? Or over-the-top dramatic? When searching for a publisher, these are all things to consider before submitting a book. I've done workshops on targeting your manuscript and truly investigating a publisher is important so you are not wasting your time or the editors time.

So, what is your opinion? Do you find it distracting to be reading and writing in the same genre?

That's it according to Maddy ~

Tootles,
Madelyn

Spring Contest Winner

Congrats to Eva M. from Richmond VA. If an editor leaves a house, it is still fine to call and see who takes their place. -- However, for a resource that is updated frequently, here's the url Literary Market Place

Association of Authors' Representatives - Looking for an agent? Go here to check them out and see if they belong.

Guide to Grammar and Style - Need grammar help--this is the site to use!

Trying to up your writing output? - This page tracker located on the home page of my website and created by Kresley Cole is a wonderful tool to use and push yourself for maximum output (directions are on tab #1).

Favorite blogs I visit often:
BookEnds Literary Agency
L.Perkins Agency - Jenny Rappaport
Knight Agency

If you have any other resources, please add them in a comment.

That's it according to Maddy ~

Tootles,
Madelyn

Contest Winner

Congratulations to Joy I. of Mesa, AZ. I work in education and Masterpiece Theater is currently airing all of Jane Austen's film adaptations. They are wonderful, engaging, and timeless. And, a draw for English teachers.

Why? I'm post more on this later, for I'm truly become an Austenite and would love to research more on Jane, her writing, and inspiration. I'll recommend the Jane Austen Society of the United Kingdom for now because let's face it, it's Jane's playing field.

But I wonder, how after all of these years, Jane has endured? Her novels aren't easy for the contemporary reader to consume. They aren't laden with sex and seduction (at least openly, sometimes it takes just a look to stir the fires).

Why do you think Jane has endured? And why do you love/hate anything Jane Austen?

I find that I truly love history and historical characters. I love timeless love that is romantic and suspenseful. I love that an author, without the help of a typewriter or computer wrote 6 novels in 7 years--got published in a decidedly difficult time for female writers, and is still a best seller.

~That's it according to Maddy

Tootles,
Madelyn

Winter Blahs

I live in the north east and we've been cold for many months now. Perfect type of weather for writing when the view outside my window doesn't distract from the task at hand.

So, what am I working on? It seems perhaps I'm working on too much. I have several stories started mostly fiction, but I've also ventured into non-fiction as well. So I find that adding to specific stories each day may take a bit of back reading to get back into the story, but I think this process is really working well for me.

I've also been reading other writer's blogs. Jane Porter is a fav of mine. Popular resolutions: lose weight, exercise more, watch spending habits~ there are so many.

Of course as a writer, I want to write more, submit (to publishers) more, enter contest, and focus on my career more.

As with many resolutions, they go to the way side around January 15th. How can we stick with our resolutions? I think planning, not being afraid of failure, and lists can help. Each year I create a list of what I have accomplished for 2007 and then I create a list of what I want to accomplish in 2008. So, when I look at the list I made last year, I can check off what I completed and it is truly interesting. I think we actually accomplish more than we realize, but don't see it because it isn't documented.

What is your New Year's Resolution? Writing or otherwise.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles,
Madelyn

Writing & Reality

Okay, My reality is that I work full-time, have three children, one husband, and a dog. I shuttle back and forth from soccer to dance, to basketball, and social engagements. My reality is--I really don't have time to write. I want to, daily. Do I get to? No (see my silly promise in the blog posting below).

I've resigned myself to accept that I won't be able to write everyday. But I have also promised myself to think about my writing, characters, plot, and editing daily.

Is thinking about writing the same as writing? Yes and no. When I think of my writing, it is almost like a pre-planning or outlining session. I find that I'm much more focused and I don't spend as much time staring at the screen wondering what the heck I'm going to write.

Of course nothing soothes the writing beast like clicking away at the keyboard or taking pen to paper to really get my story down. But in my reality, I have to adapt and pray for free time.

So, next time you are waiting for an appointment, taking a lunch break, or waiting for your children to hurry up and get in the car, think about your writing-- you may find that you've broken through a block or solved a story thread.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles,
Madelyn

Cookies, Candy Canes, & Characters

Okay, the holidays are upon us and I'm scrambling to find time to write. While driving through Michigan, Canada, and Western New York, I typed away on my husband's laptop while trying to make sure the kids didn't kill each other in the back seat and spill those damn juice boxes all over the upholstery. Who invented those things anyways? And what child doesn't instantly squeeze the juice box and spill juice all down the front of them? Excuse me, but I've digressed. While balancing the laptop on my lap and typing over pot holes and quick stops, I found I was able to really crank out a good chunk of my story.

I'm working on something new. Something I'm not certain I will ever publish, but something that has me interested in what I'm writing and looking forward to adding to daily. It's fresh and a bit naughty, but does not violate my blush radar. And I really like the main character-strong, independent, with a bit of baggage, sort of a historical Murphy Brown. Okay, so I've just dated myself. But Murphy Brown was one hell of a character.

So as I've added to this story and found surprise elements popping out and adding more layers and interest, I smile and think--wow, I'm writing.

Of the hundreds of books I've read and the numerous writers I've met, and the workshops I've presented, I sometimes question my ability to actually write a coherent sentence. And sometimes I surprise myself.

Okay, I've digressed once again. Wasn't this suppose to be about the holidays and writing? And how I took a U turn and made it into something else isn't surprising considering we have to multi task during our lives and even more so during the holidays.

I've made a goal, write every day. No matter how much. No matter how good. And no matter how late at night I'm adding to new and old stories. I'm writing every day.

So those of you out there, take a pledge with me--write every day. Get those words down, flesh out those characters, twist those plots.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles
Madelyn

Contest - To Enter or Not To Enter - That is the questions

Contest.
I'm sure the word dredges up memories and some of them not very pleasant. As a frequent contest entrant and a frequent contest judge and contest coordinator, I find that the experience is often wrought with problems and broken dreams.

As an entrant I have won, placed, and lost contest. Of course this breaks my heart, I question my ability as a writer, I curse the judge for her lack of insight, and I dwell on the comments way too much. Is this abnormal? Of course not. Is this productive? Of course not.

I took a break from entering contests. I found that it helped tremendously with my confidence. Also, I found that I was able to focus on an entire manuscript instead of perfecting the first three chapters of a manuscript. And, I found that by submitting to contests as a way to stalk(yes,I mean that type of stalking) a particular editor or agent, it took longer to hear back from them. In fact, sending query and receiving a request cut the response time considerably.

Not that contest are bad, mind you. Many cater to specific genres and topics. This can be a godsend to those writers who target this type of market. And many people enjoy entering contests and do very well. They receive a check or other type of reward and their name is printed in the RWR, which is a great marketing tool.

I guess for me, that I will hold back and try to critique with my trusted critique partners and send queries and manuscripts to those who ask. In fact, after a few years of entering contests, I am now frequently sending my manuscript to editors at their request. So, I did learn from contests, I did grow as a writer, and the comments (both negative and postitiv) have added to my toolbox.

That's it according to Maddy ~

Tootles for now,
Madelyn

Critiquing in a hostile environment

I recently had the pleasure of critiquing a friends latest manuscript. First, I have to say that I love this author's voice, way with characters, and overall fun spirit in her novels. While this book is different than her others, I think readers will find that her voice is strong and engaging in this new format. Secondly, this author critiqued my work with a great amount of helpful input that I truly appreciated and considered.

But that brings up the subject of critiquing. Do we critique or have our work critiqued because we want someone to say, "Wow, your work is so good--don't change a thing!"? OR do we want an honest accounting?

I have to admit, I did belong to a critique group. I enjoyed the weekly groupings when we'd dish over coffee and read our work and discuss changes. What I didn't enjoy was the swift change to a hostile environment when one writer did better than another in a contest or with an editor or agent. It was truly disheartening to see a once supportive group succumb to the lure of jealousy and anger. It takes a certain amount of maturity to admit, yes, I'm jealous (total human nature), but I'm happy for your success.

So, bye I went.

Did I find peace critiquing with another group or individuals? Yes---and no. With some authors, I find that once they find a thread of success, they become that know-it-all we all hated in school. They say with an imperial or condescending tone that this is the it "must" be done. Well, yes, they have found success, but I began thinking, I've had success as well. That should account for something.

So, bye I went.

By now you may be thinking I'm difficult to please, I only want kudos, and no criticism. While some critiquing is difficult to hear, my main goal for critiquing is to better my work, hear another opinion, and grow as a writer. When you are in a situation in which the relationship is one sided, and frankly passive aggressive, it is too hostile to be successful. To me, it is unforgivable for someone to thrash your manuscript over a rock, shred it to pieces and then totally disregard any comment you have for their work. Worse yet, they then change their work to reflect your comments and take all of the credit. Again, passive aggressive.

So, now I am picky who sees my work. We discuss, and sometimes bicker, but in the end, I know that the comments are for my own writing good. They aren't derived from a negative, controlling place. They are filled with support and well-wishes and are so far the longest critiquing relationships I've encountered.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles,
Madelyn

Reading Across Genres

I've been a reading feen these days. Not only am I trying to get through my TBR pile, but I continue to pick up books that interest me. I just finished Veil of Roses by Laura Fitzgerald. The novel was not only a great read, but interesting and informative as well. Yes, there were romantic elements (I maintain that nearly all books have some type of romantic element), but it wasn't what I'd call a romance and I'd label it Women's Fiction.

I find that I am drawn to stories that show me a different take on life. The Kite Runner, Double Bind, and Water for Elephants. All show me something that I'd never gravitate to normally, but that I really find broaden my capabilities as a writer and reader.

How does reading across genres help me as a writer? Many writers receive the advice--read, read, read. Well, how does it serve me as a historical writer to only read historicals? Also, how would I learn about different parts of the world if I wasn't reading Veil of Roses? By learning, reading different voices, and broadening my horizons (so to speak), I am adding to my writing toolbox. And as this toolbox grows, different layers are added my experiences and knowledge, as well as vision as a writer.

Romance is still a mainstay of my bookshelf, but Jan Karon added humor with her slice of life inspirationals, JK Rowling added mystique and wizardry with Harry, and Khaled Hosseini brought empathy and interest with The Kite Runner.

In the end, reading across genres not only brings pieces of the world's puzzle to my side, but into my heart and perhaps influences my writing in the best possible manner.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles,
Madelyn

School Is On The Horizon

Whoooo Hooooo! Okay, I feel as if I'm being a bad mother, but heck school is almost here and I'm thinking of all of the writing I'm going to accomplish once they're out of the house for so many hours a day.

Enough of that. I'd like to tackle the subject of critiquing. I love to working in a group of authors who want to improve. Recently, I've helped a few friends before they've sent their work to agents/editors. I'm not published by an RWA rec-publisher, but I have a Master's in English. So, I'm somewhat qualified.

In essence, I think that critiquing makes us better writers. If we can find errors, inconsistencies, or plot problems in other manuscripts, then we should be able to recognize them in our own.

Mostly, I love reading what my friends are creating, applauding their creativity, and discussing what's on the horizon.

Of course there are horror stories in regards to bad critic groups. Fighting, egos, and those who don't play fairly all add to the madness. But in the end, if a group can't help you, then you shouldn't allow your writing to suffer and you need to get out.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles,
Madelyn

Musings of a frustrated writer

Well, the title of this post tells it all. I'm trying to find time to write, and with work obligations (like I actually have to do some work) the kids home from school and needing constant entertainment, and the heat--I've neglected the craft I love.

Each night I sit before my computer ready, craving some writing time. Then the phone rings, something great is on TV, or the kids want a sleep over. I need to prioritize, but in the end, the kids come before writing.

So, I've devised a way to get some pages done without feeling the guilt of neglecting my children(and soccer season has ended, so huge blocks of time are free). I'm bringing my laptop with me everywhere. My son is at football practice, I'm writing. I'm waiting for the girls to finish dance, I'm writing with a cup of Joe at my side. And, when I can't use the laptop, I'm writing free hand--a long neglected art.

In addition to the family time, there is a lot to the business side of writing. Sending out proposals, participating on loops, and presenting online workshops all take up my time. Not to mention maintaining a website and blog. In the end, it is the promotional aspects that I am retaining and the other I'm slowly neglecting to see if they really matter.

I enjoy the blog and I love presenting workshops. In fact, I'm presenting a workshop right now title, "All I've learned about Gothics I've learned from Fairy Tales". Hopefully I'll be able to present it at the 2008 RWA conference. Workshops not only instruct those who attend, but I learn as I research and flesh out my notes. In the end, it's a win, win situation.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles,
Madelyn

Authors I love

As many writers are, I'm an avid reader. And since I arrived home from the RWA National conference with a suitcase full of books, I'd like to share some of my finds.

I totally enjoy anything Nora Roberts writes, who doesn't? She has a slick way of making the characters come to life on the pages and gives them a voice that is so strong. Angel Falls was a great read in which I was kept in suspense until the beginning. I enjoyed it so much that I had to finish it before I even pick up my Harry Potter new release.

I've just discovered a new author--Eve Silver. She writes fantastic Gothics for Kensington and they are truly suspenseful, visceral, and engaging. Her book, Dark Prince is in the POV of the heroine only and I found myself falling in love with the hero without even getting a taste of his POV. That is a great talent, to be sure.

And after reading a Gothic, I moved on to funnier pastures--Stephanie Plum! Lean Mean Thirteen is a hoot as Stephanie gets into more trouble than Ranger or Morelli can get her out of.

And, saving the best for last, my friend Misty Simon has written a comedy that is sure to make everyone laugh out loud (a true test of romantic comedy). Her books feature Ivy, a girl who finds trouble and solves cases with the style and grace of Lucille Ball. Check them out a www.mistysimon.com.

All of the reading has inspired me and I find that I'm craving time to write and spill my guts on paper.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles,
Madelyn

I just returned from the RWA conference and had a great time. Not only did I get to catch up with some of my writing friends, but I was able to network with other writing professionals and meet with editors and agents.

What I love most about the conference is the level of professionalism and organization. What better way to meet those who think as I do in terms of plot, story, and characters? There were several spotlights that really helped me view my writing critically and see how improvements can be made. My dream is there, the dedication is there, and now I need to get the ball rolling and really push my work out there.

One nice aspect was that a few people recognized my name. I've taught many workshops both at the RWA conference and within the chapters I belong to, as well as tried to get my name out there. It was nice to hear and I hope the trend continues.

The FF & P Gathering and the workshop I presented went off without a hitch and we really had a great time with fantastic food, gift baskets (Thank you Meri!), agent & editor chats, and contest wins.

I really can't wait for the next one in San Fransisco!

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles,
Madelyn

It's been a while!

Sorry folks, it's been a while since I've been able to post. New job, request for manuscripts, teaching writing courses, etc--have all made me a bit crazy and out of extra time.

I've had some luck since last year's RWA National Conference. A request for a full manuscript of one of my favorite novels and edits and recently a request for a partial with my favorite dream publisher. Big time and hopefully all these years of hard work have paid off.

Next week I will once again attend the RWA National Conference and meet with fellow writers and have a great time learning, mingling, and presenting a workshop.

Hopefully I will have good news soon and if not, just being asked for my work is great.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles,
Madelyn

Writing. . .

I've just finished some editing and wanted to flesh out some ideas for a new story. I started thinking about all of the books I've read in the past and how they affect or influence my writing style.

Firstly, Amanda Quick ignited my interest in romance. Secondly, Diana Gabaldon inspired me to write about the Highlands. Thirdly, Nora Roberts instructed me on how to be a prolific writer and remain a great story teller.

There are numerous writers who have encouraged me to look outside the box and bring a new element to my writing. By this I mean, outside the romance box. For I truly believe that in order to be a good writer, you must read, read, read, and read all genres.

One of my guilty pleasures is reading biographies. I love old movies and the classy, regal idea of old hollywood. In fact in my contemporary novels, I often reference Kate Hepburn or Cary Grant, or my favorites Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne. There was something in the way these movie stars conducted their lives that was so different than today's actors. And while I love going to the movies, I truly find it exciting when one of my favorite old movies is on, such as Pillow Talk, The Quiet Man, or Adam's Rib.

Perhaps this is why I love to write historicals. I like to delve into history, find tidbits of information and throw them into the mix. Bring a world to life in my writing all because I've done the research and created a story to suit.

Enough for now,
Maddy

Summer Recap

Hi all! I had an awesome time at Nationals and really learned a lot, met some great people, and networked like crazy. I have also completed my Master's degree and I'm looking to get into the workforce and still have time to write.
Of course that will be easier since summer is almost over and school is about to begin. I'll have some extra time (yeah-right) to work on my books and take care of the family.
Okay, so that's in a perfect world. Instead I'll be shuttling the kids from school to after-school activities such as soccer, dance, karate, and did I say soccer.
But enough about my family life. I really loved Atlanta. It was perfect weather and the people were so friendly. The conference really topped the last one I attended and I found that the writers were there for business and fun. I went to Hard Rock-Atlanta, Pittypats, and walked around just absorbing the atmosphere.

That's it according to Maddy~

Tootles,
Madelyn

Hi All!

It's four weeks and counting until National. I have a book signing this week at Barnes and Noble Greece Ridge in Rochester, New York on June 29th at 7pm! Love to see some friendly faces and sign some books.
My writing has stalled a bit since I'm just completing my Master's Degree in Education, but, I rip-roaring to go and eager to send some manuscripts out to editors and agents.

Tootles for now!
Madelyn

Hi All,

Okay, so today is Monday and in my house, it's time to start the diet day. I'm presenting at National and I looked in the mirror and said, "this won't do." I'm the same weight I was when I gave birth to my third child, but I digress. I started kick boxing. Now, I've done kwando flex in the past so I know all the moves. But my friend in the class has recently lost a ton of weight due to surgery, so I really have to work hard so she doesn't show me up. When class ends, I'm beet red, drenched in hard-earned sweat, and ready for a body bag. I feel good, my muscles are a little sore, but that feels good too. Now I'm working on the food part. And didn't I just eat a box of those Necco sweethearts for breakfast? The Battle of Bulge as I call it has been a life long one for me and I'm even writing about heavier characters or characters with weight issues because it's what I know. And you should write what you know. So today is day 1 in my quest to look presentable for National. Any prayers would be appreciated.

Tootles,
Madelyn

Hi All,

It's been a long time since I've blogged, but you know, the holidays, kids, school, yadda yadda.

Great news--I'm going to be presenting my workshop "To Target or Not To Target" at the Romance Writers National Conference this July. I'll try to keep my post to a minimum, but filled with interesting information.
I have just heard back that I placed fourth. Not bad, since it was a new manuscript. But again, it would have been nice to have placed a little higher. (Heavy sigh) The life of a writer is alway seems to be waiting zone. I'm entering a new contest with a tried and true manuscript that has been edited, edited, edited (hopefully not to death). So keep your fingers crossed.
My latest work is a bit of chick-lit and women's fiction. I'm not sure will it will end up, but it is a ton of fun to be working on and I get to use my sacastic wit that I try to put on hold for my other works. The manuscript is perhaps one of the most personal things I've written.
My life is a bit busy with finishing a Master's Degree, taking care of three kids, and trying to write--oh, and I have a job too! I try to forget that, but it kinda' cramps my style--writing style, that is. I have to cram writing into my day whether it be at 4am or 11pm.
I'll keep you updated on the writing side of life. Keep checking back.

Tootles,
Madelyn
